Retiring officers are woefully underserved when it comes to transition assistance, and Military Transitions has a new program to fill the gap. A classroom alternative to our audio course entitled, "Your Military Transition," The Officers Transition Course is a must for any officer approaching retirement or post-retirement. The course is designed for the individual transitioning from military service to civilian employment, and brings to bear the most current thinking and trends in the civilian hiring sector.
How is it different from ETAP and ACAP transition training?
Military officers are highly sought by many industries but face unique challenges in the civilian job market. These challenges are not currently met by existing transition programs which are, by necessity, generic to a larger audience. The Military Officer to Civilian Leader program has been designed by a team of business leaders, seasoned executive placement professionals and transition experts. Content can be modified to accommodate groups of NCOs or Flag Officers.
What will I learn in the training program?
The course design is based on more than a decade of experience placing former officers into positions of leadership, and then coaching them through the transition process. Leveraging our substantial database of success factors and proven derailers, the course is designed to accelerate performance and avoid common piNalls. Topics include:
Competing & Winning in the Civilian Job Market
Assessing Your Market Positioning
Civilianizing Your Resume
Leveraging Your Professional Network
Creating & Managing Your Brand
Mastering the Civilian Job Interview Process
Evaluating Offers & Opportunities
Negotiating Your Civilian Compensation Package
Making a Smooth Transition

Real World Examples
Preventing Career Derailment
Situation: A newly-retired senior military officer in imminent danger of losing his job due to fractured relationships with staff, loss of confidence and advocacy among his superiors, and unsatisfactory job performance.
Coaching Focus: Break down initial resistance, replace “command and control” leadership style with collaborative style, shed counter-productive military practices
Outcome: By learning and integrating behavior more conducive to civilian success, and by challenging his own assumptions, this coaching client was able to rebuild his relationships with staff, regain the support of his superiors, and achieve measurable success. His level of satisfaction and engagement increased dramatically and, seven years later, he remains a valuable senior manager in his organization.
Client Quote: “The biggest thing I got out of coaching was understanding how to deal with people who weren’t prior or current military. Understanding the company I currently work for better – there were a lot of nuances I didn’t understand. The coaching really helped me. As a result, life has gotten better; the biggest thing is my colleagues are more receptive to me personally.”
Grooming for Promotion
Situation: A successful business executive on track for promotion identified a group of junior staff outside his chain of command whose lack of support threatened the promotion
Coaching Focus: Uncover sub-conscious attitudes undermining success with this group, increase overall self-awareness and Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
Outcome: Uncovering hidden beliefs held-over from a career of military service allowed the retired Naval officer to increase self-awareness and update his thinking. This paved the way to repairing damaged relationships, gaining universal support over time and, ultimately, to promotion
Client Quote: “Emily King was a wonderful coach who did a very impressive job gathering and interpreting data that allowed me to focus on areas for growth. The Emotional Intelligence profile was also very revealing. I would highly recommend her as an Executive Coach.”
Retaining Key Talent
Situation:A highly successful and well-liked senior manager and Reserve officer was passed over for promotion. As a result, she was actively pursuing opportunities with competitors.
Coaching Focus: Explore and clarify career goals, use external data to identify root cause of being passed-over, use real-time feedback to raise awareness of personal impact and integrate new behaviors, chart a path forward
Outcome: By effectively integrating feedback to become more assertive, this coaching client took ownership of her career. She was able to advocate for herself with her superiors by constructively articulating career goals and working with them to develop a 12-month plan. In the short term, this client successfully negotiated a salary increase rather than resigning as originally planned.
Client Quote: “Coaching gave me great insight into how I am perceived in the workplace, and also gave me tools to help influence those perceptions. Transformational, I moved from a work attitude of anxiety and frustration to the feeling of being a valued and contributing team member.”
We offer training for coaches and any individual who works directly with transitioning service members. Our training is endorsed by the International Coach Federation (ICF), and participants receive Continuing Coach Education (CCE) credit for completing the program.
